Automated External Defrillator
822. AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR
The board recognizes the importance of providing heath safety equipment and properly trained individuals to treat individuals who experience sudden cardiac arrest.
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a self-contained piece of equipment designed for use by trained and certified individuals in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.
As the medical advisor for the district, the school physician shall prescribe the purchase of AED units and shall review and approve guidelines for emergency use.
The AED may be used by any individual who has completed certification in CPR and AED by a nationally recognized training program or by any trained volunteer emergency responder who has current certification.
1. AED units will be provided by the district and housed in secure and accessible locations at the various district facilities, as determined by the Superintendent and/or his/her designee. Units should be made accessible during outdoor events, as well as within each district building.
2. The district will encourage, but not mandate, all staff members including custodians, coaches, and athletic trainers, to obtain and maintain certification in CPR and AED through a nationally recognized training program, but will ensure a trained response team is established in each building. Community members involved in booster or parent/school organizations should be offered the opportunity to participate at their own expense. An in-service training video shall be kept in the nurse’s office in each building for trained responders to review at any time to provide reinforcement of skills.

3. The following resources will be used to establish and maintain national standards for AED use:
· PA Public Access Defibrillation Law Summary.· American Red Cross and/or American Heart Association Guidelines, as currently presented in training programs.· Good Samaritan Act providing immunity from liability exclusion.· Infection Control Procedure for exposure to blood borne pathogens.
